Energy Conservation= preservation of a better future
So let's all put in a little energy to save more and more and more as we go on.
INTRODUCTORY VIDEO A Glimpse
Aim:- Our aim is to define the various ways of Saving Energy at School.
1. IntroductionSchools use a dramatically large amount of energy and quite a lot of this is unnecessarily wasted. This means that education facilities are spending a lot of their allocated budget on energy, despite potentially not using all that they are paying for. The Government reduces the allowance for education annually, and as budgets are becoming more and more limited, saving energy through minimising running costs and power wastage in schools, is a method that can come in very useful. To combat this, schools that may over-use their energy resources need to first start to think about what exactly they waste their energy on. For example, ‘Lighting’ is one of the main culprits for overuse, and a prime example of how schools may unknowingly waste excess energy. When you assess the daily routine within an academy, school or college, you realise that the very first action a staff member takes, would be to turn on all of the lights in the premises or at least in the main classrooms, to initiate the start of the working day. These lights remain on throughout the entire duration of a normal school day, as well as after hours for teachers working overtime, or cleaners and caretakers in the evening. These lights would either then be switched off for the very first time that day, right at the end of the evening once all staff and students have left, or could even remain on for security purposes throughout the night! 2.Interview with your School |

Sir Anant Yadnik says that the recycling of waste is a big industry in which India is able to cope with the other developed countries. About waste management, the food which is wasted in the canteen is taken by the MCGM. So the energy of the food which is wasted in the canteen is saved. Except for this there is no food wasted. He also says that, his school thought of having machines which recycle the wastes like peels of fruits and vegetables. But the problem is that they do not have space and smells a lot. Even if he uses those machines then he will not be able to use the manure in such a way to prevent the wasting of energy. The energy is also saved by switching of the appliances when not in use and the computers are only switched on when they are in use. |

The Three Methods that can be used to actively save energy are as follows:-
1. Replace your Light Bulbs - Traditional incandescent light bulbs consume an excessive amount of electricity and must be replaced more often than their energy efficient alternatives. Halogen Incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), and light emitting diode bulbs (LEDs) use anywhere from 25 - 80 percent less electricity/ energy and last 3 to 25 times longer than traditional bulbs. LED technology is available in many lighting product types including replacements for 40W, 60W, 75W and 100W traditional incandescent bulbs.
2. Use Smart Power Strips - “Phantom loads,” or the electricity used by electronics when they are turned off or in standby mode, are a major source of energy waste. In fact, it is estimated that 75% of the energy used to power household electronics is consumed when they are switched off, which can cost you up to $200 per year. Smart power strips, also known as advanced power strips, eliminate the problem of phantom loads by shutting off the power to electronics when they are not in use. Smart power strips can be set to turn off at an assigned time, during a period of inactivity, through remote switches, or based on the status of a “master” device.
3. Purchase Energy Efficient Appliances - On average, appliances are responsible for roughly 13% of total household energy use. When purchasing an energy efficient appliance, you should look for appliances with the ENERGY STAR label, which is a federal guarantee that the appliance will consume less energy during use and when on standby than standard models. Energy savings differ based on the specific appliance. For example, ENERGY STAR certified clothes washers consume 25% less energy and 45% less water than conventional ones, whereas ENERGY STAR refrigerators use only 9% less energy.
6. The SDG Activity
By 2030, the UN eyes to enhance international co-operation to facilitate access to clean energy research and technology, including renewable energy, energy efficiency and advanced and cleaner fossil-fuel technology, and promote investment in energy infrastructure and clean energy technology in schools and universities.Across the world, UN Environment is working with universities to set up national and regional Green Universities Networks to enable institutions to incorporate low carbon-climate resilience development strategies and sustainability in education, training and campus operations. Most schools use a lot of electricity to ensure the facility is safe, secure, comfortable and conducive to learning for students. Everything from lighting to climate control adds to the electrical expenses related to running a school. Teachers can look at energy-saving efforts in school as an option to work with students. The children in class can help come up with innovative ideas to save electricity at school. |

7. Conclusion
After all this research, we have come to the conclusion that there is not just one way of saving energy at school but multiple ways that can account for saving energy at school on a large scale.
1) Firstly, as said by a lot of students, we should switch off the fans, air conditioners and lights of the classroom when not in use and try to make use of the natural sunlight as much as possible.
2) Try to use stairs instead of lifts wherever possible which will not only help in reducing energy use but can also benefit your health.
3) Schools should set a standard temperature for the air conditioners in classes where the students shouldn’t be allowed to lower the temperature, this could hugely affect the energy used by air conditioners.
4) Schools should use LEDs instead of the traditional bulb which can help in reducing energy use from 25-80%.
5) Schools can also use ‘Smart Power Strips’ which help in reducing the energy an appliance uses when it is switched off.
6) While purchasing electronic appliances, not only the school but even a common man should look out for a Star Mark on the product which signifies that the product uses less energy than other standard models.

It was a pleasure working in EUMIND. It was very nice interacting with the students of. The interaction took place via zoom. We answered the doubts of the students of the other group and tried the best ways to help them. The project helped me to grow the leadership skills and work as a team. This project also influenced me to save energy in the most effective ways. We used a lot of research methodologies. We helped each other in various tasks. This project also taught me researching skills, communicating skills and creativity. Sometimes there were problems while submitting the tasks on time but we managed to do it. Overall, it was a nice experience to be part of and I would want to participate in EUMIND once again when the school reopens. |

The EUMIND 2021-2022 went really good for me especially the fact that we got to learn a lot and most importantly we communicated with people whom we never met which boosted our confidence immensely. We also got to know about various techniques of doing research and analysis. Something that I would have done differently would have been that we could have shown a demo or made a short video on the ways of saving energy which would have included instances where students would turn off lights while leaving the classroom or other ways that could inspire other people to do the same. |

The entire EUMIND Program was quite interactive, as all of us were engaged in the tasks given to us. The best part it taught us was “Group Work”, and how to work collaboratively. Interacting with the students of Netherlands was also quite new for me, and the video conferences went very smooth; thanks to the technology that we have with us right now. Communication with our fellow teammates was done on WhatsApp, which made the entire project seem quite easy. In the start, our group did have some difficulties as we were a bit late on updating the work, but gradually, we got the knack of it. Something that I would have liked to do differently was that we could conduct face to face interviews, instead of the virtual ones, which was not possible due to the Covid19 Pandemic. |

The EUMIND 2021-2022 was a really exciting and new experience to me, mainly due the fact that we had engaged in virtual interactions between students from the Netherlands to discuss the several topics about going green and conserving energy. We gained knowledge and had a lot of fun at the same time ! Getting to know the opinions of others from totally different nations expanded my imagination and helped me understand their viewpoint on the conserving energy. |

The EUMIND 2021-2022 really helped me to develop various skills such as teamwork, communication and hard-work. It was exciting and knowledgeable. The virtual interactions with the students of Netherlands went very well and discussed several topics about conserving energy. We also helped each other in our tasks and worked with unity. This project helped me to understand their viewpoints as well. We could also have created a video in the school about the ways of saving energy at school. The EUMIND project was interesting and I would want to work with the project again when the school reopens. |
